About Cannabis

In Quebec, the minimum legal age to possess or purchase cannabis is 21 years of age. It is prohibited for people under 21 years of age to possess cannabis.

It is possible to possess a maximum of 30 grams of dried cannabis or its equivalent in a public place.

The possession limit in a private residence is 150 grams of dried cannabis or its equivalent, regardless of the number of people who live there.

For example, if three people 21 years of age or over live in the same residence, the limit is still 150 grams.

A person 21 years of age or over may not possess more than a total of 150 grams of dried cannabis or its equivalent in all of his or her residences.

It is prohibited to cultivate cannabis for personal use. It is also prohibited to possess a cannabis plant for personal use.

It is prohibited to possess cannabis in certain places, in particular places accessible to people under 21 years of age. For example:

• On the premises or inside daycares;
• On the premises or inside schools (including Adult Education Centres);
• Outside and inside detention centers.

The only place to legally buy cannabis in Quebec is from the Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC). It is illegal to buy cannabis from anywhere or anyone else.
