The legislation on cannabis

Starting October 17, 2018, the possession of cannabis will become legal in Canada for people aged 18 years and older. Until the legalization of cannabis, the possession of cannabis remains illegal in Nunavik and the rest of Canada.

​What are the changes in Québec?

A person will be able to possess up to 30 grams of dried cannabis or its equivalent in a public space, but only if it has been purchased from the Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC).
In a private residence, the possession limit will be 150 grams of dried cannabis or its equivalent (regardless of the number of people living there).

What are the restrictions?

It will be prohibited to use cannabis where it is prohibited to smoke tobacco.
It will also be prohibited on:
The grounds of health and social services institutions;
On the grounds of Cegeps and universities;
On bicycle paths;
In bus shelters and in shared transportation waiting areas.

What does not change?

As specified under municipal bylaw 2.6, it is still prohibited to be under the influence of drugs in a public space or venue.
It is still prohibited for minors to possess or give cannabis.
It is still prohibited to cultivate cannabis for personal use.
It is still prohibited to drive a road vehicle under the influence of cannabis.

Sale of cannabis

Cannabis will be sold by the Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC).

Only persons 18 years and older will be able to buy cannabis, up to a limit of 30 grams per visit.

In the following months, the KRPF will conduct a communications and awareness campaign on cannabis.
