General information
The Nunavik Police Service is subject to the Act respecting Access to documents held by public bodies and the Protection of personal information. Under this law, every person has the right to:
- Access documents held by the NPS, subject to the applicable restrictions and exceptions.
- Be informed of personal information about them held by the NPS.
- Correct personal information about them if it is inaccurate or incomplete or if the Act does not authorize the information to be collected, released or kept.
How to file a request
To request an operational document, send a written request, including:
- Your contact information (last name, first name, address, telephone number, date of birth, etc.)
- A handwritten signature
- A copy of a government-issued piece of identification (for example health card, driver’s licence, or passport). It must be clearly legible.
The request must be as specific as possible so that the desired documents can be identified and located.
If you request documents that may contain personal information about another person, their duly signed written consent must be included with your request.
This consent must be sufficiently detailed with regard to the documents in question and the identity of the person or organization authorized to consult the documents and it must be dated recently.
To request an administrative document, send a written request, including:
- Your contact information (last name, first name, address, telephone number)
- The documents requested.
The request must be as specific as possible so that the desired documents can be identified and located. For this type of request, you do not need to send a copy of an ID.

Restrictions to right of access
Submitting a request for access does not guarantee that you will obtain the desired documents.
The NPS may refuse to transmit a document or confirm its existence if its disclosure would likely:
- Impede the progress of proceedings before a person or body carrying on adjudicative functions;
- Hamper a future or current investigation or an investigation that may be reopened;
- Reveal a method of investigation, a confidential source of information, or a program or plan of action designed to prevent, detect or repress crime or statutory offences;
- Endanger the safety of a person;
- Cause prejudice to the person who is the source or the subject of the information;
- Reveal the components of a communications system intended for the use of a person responsible for law enforcement;
- Reveal information transmitted in confidence by a police service having jurisdiction outside Québec;
- Facilitate the escape of a prisoner; or
- Prejudice the fair hearing of a person’s case.
The time frame set out by the Act respecting Access to Documents is no later than 20 days following receipt of the request, either by giving access to the documents requested, explaining why the documents are not accessible, or referring the requester to the appropriate organization. In some cases, an additional 10-day delay may be required to process a request.
Generally, access to a document is free. However, the NPS may charge a fee not exceeding the cost of transcribing, reproducing or transmitting the document. The NPS will indicate the approximate amount to the applicant in advance, in accordance with the terms and conditions set out in the Regulation respecting fees for the transcription, reproduction or transmission of documents or personal information.
All events concerning a violent or unnatural death are subject to a coroner’s investigation. The NPS cannot transmit copies of its report because only the Chief Coroner can communicate a police report appended to a coroner’s report.
