Statement by Jean-Pierre Larose, O.O.M. Chief of Police, Nunavik Police Service
I stand before you today deeply affected by the recent tragedy that has shaken our community. One premature loss of life is one too many, and today we carry the weight of this loss together.
To the families mourning this unimaginable loss, I extend my deepest sympathies. I know how it feels because I myself lost a son in a tragic event. I want to assure you that the Kativik Regional Government and the Nunavik Police Service are here for you. We are committed to being present, to listening, and to walking this journey of healing with you. Healing takes time, and rebuilding trust takes even longer. I am committed to ensuring that the Nunavik Police Service does whatever it takes to support this community with transparency, accountability and care.
Québec is undertaking several investigations which are crucial to understanding what happened. Once the final reports are presented, we will implement every recommendation.
I understand that people have expressed strong opinions on the state of policing in Nunavik. I want to acknowledge those concerns, I hear them. Criticism, when constructive, is an opportunity for growth and change. I assure you that we are listening, and we are ready to adapt to serve this community better.
As we move forward, the Nunavik Police Service is committed to strengthening our bond with the community. Programs like cultural competency training, de-escalation training, the use of body cameras, and partnerships with social workers are steps we have taken to modernize and improve. Programs alone, though, are not enough. Real change will be measured by our actions, by our commitment to accountability, and by the trust we earn each day.
We cannot do this alone. It will take open dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared vision to move forward from this tragedy.
Today, I ask for your partnership. As Chief of Police, my team and I are committed to a future where every member of this community feels seen, heard and protected.
Together, we can heal. Together, we can rebuild trust.
Nakurmiik. Thank you.
